Vacation Improves Health
Oct. 22, 2007
By Gloria Walton (Ed.S., chief investigator and president of AMT).

AMT Wellness Program encourages employees to take getaways.  Our goals are to restore good health and increase employee productivity through the magic of vacationsGetaways reduce stress.  Unlike traditional wellness programs which focus on exercise and healthy food, AMT emphasizes good mental health and employee productivity.  Employers, large and small, are coming up with creative ways to get employees healthy.  They know that healthy employees increase productivity.

Have you notice that some employees are more enthusiastic than others?   Why is that some employees out perform other employees?   Read further to see problems which affect employee productivity.   The solution is to take a getaway.  Benefits for taking a getaway are listed below.

First, let’s talk about problems which hinder employee productivity.

Fear  I'm afraid to ask for time off.

a)  Some employees fear that time off could lead to unemployment (CareerBuilder.com, 2006).  Goodwyn (2007) says that most employees have paid vacation days off, however, one in three has not use a vacation day.

b)  Some employees fear falling behind, and even worse, being replaced if
they don’t give 110% (Zamora, 2006).  Why not vacations?
     a) I’m too busy.  Too busy!
     b) I want money back.
     c) I can not afford to vacation.
     d) I can not schedule in advance.

Family is another problem   I need a vacation!
a)  Women who rarely take vacations, say that their home life is more disruptive due to work (Schellpfeffer, 2005).  McCarty (2005) conducted a study of 1,500 working women, published in the Wisconsin Medical Journal.  Not only did women reported having a disruptive home life, but they reported feelings tired, exhausted, and having less than eight hours of sleep.

Marital dissatisfaction  I hate you!
a)  Marital satisfaction decreases as the frequency of vacations decrease (Schellpfeffer, 2005).  Marital dissatisfaction can affect work.  Some people bring their problems to work.  Researchers report that issues which most affect employee productivity are stress by 72% and  personal and family issues by 59% (HR.BLR.com, 2005).

Depression, built-up tension, and stress
a)  Depression increases as the frequency of vacations decrease (Schellpfeffer, 2005).
I am sick of this....
b)  Without a vacation, employees will be stressed out.  Vacations release built-up tension and stress (Britt, 2005).  Moran (2004) writes that American employers who make it a practice of monitoring employees who take too much time off, would do well to monitor those who work too much.  It could save them money in healthcare costs.

The last problem is health  Heart attack
a)  Vacations decrease the “risk of death from heart disease in men by 32% and in women by 50%” (Goodwyn, 2007).  Joe Robinson, founder of the Work to Live organization, states that work-related stress brings down health by causing distress to the heart.   A nine year study finds that men who vacation regularly have a lower risk of death than men who skip their vacations.   Also, the study finds that middle-aged women who skip their vacation have eight times the risk of either having a heart attack, or dying of heart disease (Gump and Matthews, 2000).

b)  The next time that someone tells you that you need a vacation, listen to what they really mean.  “There’s something wrong with you.  You can’t see it, but I sure can.”  Stressed out.

Second, the solution to these problems

AMT Wellness Program is the solution.  We help employees to reduce stress through the magic of vacations.  Participants are given free and discounted getaways to make vacations affordable and to reboot vacation memories.

Through monthly excerpts, AMT instructs participants how to use vacation memories to suppress stress.  By using a simple
meditation technique,  employees can take their 15 minutes break to sit in a chair with their eyes closed pushing out stressful thoughts and replacing them with vacation memories.Remove stressful thoughts.  The purpose is to release endorphins, which flow through the brain cells.  The goal is to reduce stress so that health improves.  Good health increases employee productivity.

Now, let’s see how much money you can save by taking a free getaway.  Take Orlando as an example, the average cost of a hotel is $80 per night, times 3 nights is $240 for the hotel.  Our getaways require you to see a 90 minutes sales presentation.   I ask, what's 90' compared to four days and three nights for free?

Third, benefits for taking a getaway  Play to gather, stay to gather

1.  Restored family bonds
a)  The best way to reconnect with your family is by taking a vacation (Moran, 2004).  AMT provides an economical way tof take the whole family on vacation.  Family vacations give you quality time to reconnect with your children and to restore family unity.

2.  Restored spousal bonds   I'm falling in love again.
a)  Vacation is the best way to restore broken bonds with your spouse.  AMT gives  you a break from everyday stressors of work and home.   Take your spouse on her dream vacation.  Take the opportunity to reflect on qualities which made you fall in love (for example, his laughter, smile, or smell).  Take the opportunity to reflect with your spouse.

3.  Rejuvenated employees    energy
a)  Vacations protect and restore health by reducing stress, thus, rejuvenating employees  (Gump and Matthews, 2000).  After an AMT getaway, employees return to work with a higher level of energy.  Vacations are good for your mental health, which may help you to do a better job at work.  Goodwyn says that getting away from the office for a week is not only exhilarating, but vital to your health.  Vital!

4.  Increased productivity  I am at my best!
a)  By allowing workers to take days off, employers can gain a more productive staff (Goodwyn, 2007).  AMT uses vacation memories to reduce stress.  Once stress is low, employee productivity will be high.

5.  Better health   Healthy
a)  Vacations make employees healthy, more relaxed, and happy.  Vacations reduce absenteeism, increase productivity, boost morale, and reduce healthcare costs.   AMT gives away free getaways because vacations are more protective against death from coronary heart disease, which is influenced by stress.

6.  Health insurance discounts   Lower insurance cost.
a)  Employers, large and small, are reaping the benefits of implementing a wellness program (HR.BLR.com: Oct., 2006).  AMT wellness program helps lower the claim experiences, which reduces insurance renewals.  By implementing a wellness program and having healthy employees, employers decrease their chances of paying higher insurance (HR.BLR.com: Nov., 2006).

In conclusion, we all have stressful jobs.  Stress leads to poor mental health.  AMT uses vacation memories to reduce stress.  A hush!  Vacation memories release chemicals in the brain which make you feel good.  These feel good chemicals are call endorphimens, which flow through brain cells.

Employees are encourage to take at least two vacations per year to reboot vacation memories.  AMT gives away getaways for this reason.  Some getaways are free and some are offered at a huge discount.

The bottom line is that vacations are good for the heart, for both men and women (Keough, 2007).
